Update (Jan 30, 2012): ARPA Canada's Legal Counsel André Schutten was interviewed by Capital News Online about this issue. Read their coverage here. The media has been all over the issue of sex-selection feticide in the last couple of days, and thankfully so. Dr. Rajendra Kale, editor-in-chief of the Canadian Medical Association Journal, published an editorial on Monday calling for doctors to not reveal the gender of their unborn baby to women until after 30 weeks. Dr. Kale argues, “a few of them [Asian immigrants] also imported their preference for having sons and aborting daughters. Female feticide happens in India and China by the millions, but it also happens in North America in numbers large enough to distort the male to female ratio in some ethnic groups.”
Somewhate hidden in a statement concerning girls' rights, and yet so clearly stated, the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister for Status of Women, has called for an examination of the practice of sex-selection feticide. Published in the Edmonton Journal, the Minister states that "sexselection feticide denies millions of girls the right to be born merely because they are girls." How true and how terrible! The practice happens right here in Canada too. See this discussion paper by the EFC on gendercide in Canada for more on that. We applaud Ms. Ambrose for not shying away from this politically sensitive issue. It must be dealt with. Girls should not be killed before they are born simply because they are girls (nor should boys for that matter). Please email Ms. Ambrose to thank her for calling for protection of girls. Also take the time to respectfully request that she end the barbaric practice of sex-selection feticide in Canada too. To see a sample letter, click read more...
ARPA NOTE: Please take the time to send Mr Watson ([email protected]) a note of appreciation for his courage in supporting this very important debate! CBC News, December 23, 2011 - Essex Conservative MP Jeff Watson supports a colleague's call for parliamentary discussion about whether to give human rights to the unborn. Kitchener-Centre's Tory MP Stephen Woodworth said in a media release issued earlier this week that Canadian laws governing human rights and the unborn are outdated and need to be re-examined. "I have to say, I support Steven Woodworth’s call for...
